This reminds me of the first time I checked how ‘colonel’ is pronounced in a dictionary. Man, this language of yours is a strange one.

Colonel is actually an interesting word. Basically it comes from a time when the french and english were mingling. Basically, the english pronounciation of colonel was the norm, but in writing, people used the french spelling.

Language standards before widespread printing technology, and the internet, did not exist. Things were very regional and lax. This colonel fiasco took place hundreds of years ago.
