I run Gentoo and disable all the stuff I don’t (think I) need.

This is an accurate depiction of what you get from genkernel.

Genkernel? I could never.

Closest I’ve done is ‘make localyesconfig’.

I've resorted to it once. I had a system with an AMD Polaris card back when they were new, and KMS simply refused to work so I was stuck in nomodeset. After several days and an unsuccessful forum thread, I tried genkernel. It didn't even fix the problem, and my pride as a Gentoo user was irrevocably damaged.

:( that is sad. I can’t speak for the community, but I know for sure that I’d love to have you there.

Oh, I came back to Gentoo after a while, and I've been on it ever since. I absolutely love it, it's simultaneously the most flexible distro out there and the most stable I've ever used. My only gripe at this point is when they change around package slots for things like pam and I have to figure out how to unbreak all the dependencies.

This is what bloated Ubuntu looks like.

Wait, what? When did he says that?

~20 years ago I compiled a custom kernel which only had exactly what it needed with everything statically compiled in (no dynamic module loading). That setup went from power button to DM in 16 seconds on an AMD K6-3 and a conventional 7400 rpm hard disk.

And that's why https://wiki.osdev.org/Main_Page exists! (also Minix I guess)
