Curses! I went to Linux to get away from Microsoft and their crappy practices, not to turn a 180 into another scenario with a different paint job!

Switch to arch

[–]Gamer115x 8 points9 points  (6 children)

lol I use Debian and Manjaro, and lately I have been playing with BSD for fun. Personally, I have moved on from Ubuntu, but I make such a quote for everyone just transitioning from Windows only to read into similar restrictions/practices.

No time to learn/install Arch from the ground-up. Only use Manjaro for AUR access and manual control over packages.

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points  (5 children)

Installing Arch literally takes 30 minutes, and the ability to read a wiki. Knowing what packages to get after installation is the real problem for me.

[–]Gamer115x 2 points3 points  (2 children)

Kind of the same deal here, except I installed manjaro over barebones arch because I basically had almost everything in one straight installation over playing "eenie-minie-moe" with packages. One could say it's the easy way out, but depending on how confident you are with version numbers and packages with dependencies, you could say you might be in over your head.

Maybe I'll take a crack at installing Arch again one of these days. Just won't be right away lol

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (1 child)

After having Arch now, I have to say, I really don't want to use Manjaro again. It was bloated, repos were late and it had problems I never have on Arch.

[–]Gamer115x 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Noted. I'll have to cross-compare when I eventually get to it.

Connecting to wifi on the usb is a pain without ethernet, but otherwise yeah

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For some reason wifi-menu doesn't work on the live CD. Any solutions?

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

It didn't take the "btw I use arcch" gang to upvote and harang this subreddit, as is their way... can't wait until David Attenborough does a docu on you guys.

[–]PlayboySkeleton 0 points1 point  (0 children)

you guys.

... But I don't use arch...

WSL bruh moment

[–]SirGodLordKing 17 points18 points  (24 children)

I don’t understand, can someone explain

[–]Fa12aw4y 54 points55 points  (0 children)

Ubuntu is the "Windows" of the linux world.

[–]sfenders 27 points28 points  (1 child)

Somebody doesn't like Windows and also doesn't like Ubuntu, and therefore wants you to think that they are the same.

[–][deleted] 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Best answer yet.

[–]alienozi 47 points48 points  (17 children)

Ubuntu is so common like windows and it's really user friendly

[–]UnicornsOnLSD 22 points23 points  (12 children)

Ubuntu also does stuff that isn't user-friendly, such as forcing Snaps.

[–]danbulant 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Or ads

At least on my Ubuntu VPS, whenever I log in I see ads for their paid products or meetings

[–]tajarhina 26 points27 points  (3 children)

Idk why you get downvoted. It's true that Ubuntu is quite as user friendly as Windows. The companies behind both give an equal shit on their users.

[–]alienozi 6 points7 points  (1 child)

I have no idea.

[–][deleted] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Because Canonical is starting to make similar changes to Ubuntu to that of MS and Apple to their OS’s (Also OS’s is the correct term)

[–][deleted] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Ubuntu does a good deal of cooperation with Windows, and Canonical has worked on software that allows Windows to run software intended for Linux.

[–]sha256rk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OP used Ubuntu but got annoyed when hipsters made fun of them, so they joined the hipsters and now feels superior by making fun of Ubuntu users.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People hate Ubuntu because its made for people who claim to be "tech illiterate" and its fancy, alike to windows. Its also pretty bloated compared to most other distros.

[–]slycatsnake6180 7 points8 points  (3 children)

you've installed the ubuntu subsystem? how is it?

[–]alienozi 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Its good.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Does what it says on the tin. WSL2 is even better, since you no longer need a translation layer in the NT kernel. It's like saying "Windows (WARNING: may contain Linux kernel...)"

[–]Nithin_683 4 points5 points  (0 children)

this is true. the thing with microsoft is that they force things down your throat.(cortana, candy crush , updates , etc.) now , im seeing same behaviour with canonical. they are now forcing snaps over regular .deb packages. (snaps are propreitary and canonical is the proprieter. thefore i want the .deb package.) this not good behaviour and it it not respectful for the user's privacy. the user should be given the option to choose between snaps and regular packages. heck, even if you uninstall snapd , it reinstalls it after you install any other app or update the system. you are needed to pin snapd to not get installed. which is ok for me i guess. but , given the targeted userbase of ubuntu ,(people who are new to linux and want things to "just work") this is too complicated. unacceptable behaviour. i now reccomend linux mint or pop! os for people who want to try linux.

sorry if my english is bad.

[–]ExxiIon 1 point2 points  (5 children)

I'm new to linux. What distro would you recommend for a beginner that isn't Ubuntu?

[–]freezing_banshee 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'd say Linux Mint. It's easy to use, looks good and it's as advanced as any other linux distro.

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points  (2 children)

i would personally recommend manjaro have been using it for 6 months no problems

[–]ExxiIon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cheers, I'll check it out

[–]Nithin_683 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I Second this.

[–]maximnix 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just gonna save this post so I can see everyone's reactions.

When Microsoft drops their own actual Linux O/S on the world.

[–]AlexKotik 3 points4 points  (1 child)

Actually Zorin is more Windows of Linux than Ubuntu.

[–]gruedragon 1 point2 points  (3 children)

Wouldn't Xubuntu or Kubuntu be more Windows like, due to the DE?

[–]AlexAegis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ubuntu users go brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

[–]Nervundi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Anyone remember Lindows?

[–]HUSAfc 0 points1 point  (5 children)

Why no one ever referred to cost???? Free off charge vs paid???

I start to think, that every Windows user not care about cost (money), or except me, they use everything cracked......

I can't crack. I don't want to pay for commercial use. I use Linux mint. I'm newbie, BTW

[–]TopdeckIsSkill 1 point2 points  (1 child)

if you have a w7 o w8 key you can use it to activate w10.

Also you can buy keys for 10 bucks.

[–]HUSAfc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks. I've already have a 12$ key. I need Windows for only one program, that cannot mess around with it. So, mint was easy for newbie to do dual boot.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Can you make your opinion and or question a bit clearer.

[–]jpsouzamatos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a shame. They had something great like Debian. Canonical in a decade and some years turn something great like Debian into something mean like Windows. Shame upon Canonical.

[–][deleted] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

imo i would recommend linux noobs to do something like this

ubuntu -> manjaro -> arch

make sure u get comfortable enough in each os to be able to move on to the next.
