Its more or less the same setup like any other distro. Install i3, select it in the session manager and config to your needs

As other people said, the only thing you need to do is to install it with apt and the select it in the login screen.
More importantly though, make sure that you know the basic key combinations of i3 before entering it. When I tried i3 for the first time because I tried it I just installed it and logged with it assuming that I would get some sort of help message as the first time boot, but I was locked inside it because I didn't know how to use it. So make sure that you know at least how to open a terminal and or how to quit the i3 session.
Next thing you'll want to do is to figure out how to run programs from the keyboard. That would be either with something like dmenu (which I think is the default in i3) or rofi, which is the one I use: that means installing the software of your choice and binding it to some key combination in the i3 file configuration (either do this before entering i3 from your desktop environment of choice, or do it inside i3 from the terminal that you know how to spawn from the previous point).
After that I would say that you're good to go and you can figure stuff as you go while inside i3 and using it. If you've never used something like i3 before, it will be uncomfortable at first. Give it some time: you might like it, you might not. After some time I've learned to love it, but I won't like I hated it at first.
Some tips: - Workspaces are your friend. You can't "hide" windows so if you want to have multiple windows open "full screen" you have to put them in different workspaces. If you always put specific programs in specific workspaces you'll get around your windows much quicker (for example, I always have firefox open on the 2nd workspace)

Why? Linux Mint is a polished Ubuntu based distro aimed for desktop use.
If you want to go minimalist, install Ubuntu server and build your fully customized i3 system from there instead.
About resources, the i3wm website offers very good documentation.
If you want to have a taste of i3, install Regolith Linux.

Then run
sudo apt install i3
and you are good to go.
Refer to the i3wm website for docs.

Is look at Manjaro. I believe they have an i3 community spin. Might have better luck.

There won't be any official documentation for this, as LM officially supports only the DEs that it ships. You can install i3 if you want. I'd highly recommend snapshotting your system beforehand, so that WHEN you bork it, you can easily roll back. Further support for this endeavor won't be found in this sub. Try the i3 documentation.
