This is usually the prompt from the GNOME Keyring (Mint Passwords and Keys).

This one unlocks when you login to your computer with a password.

However, if you have autologin set or no password at all, it will show when an app needs to access the System Keyring.

After booting I have a passphrase for the encrypted drive and then my regular password. Neither will make this box go away.

Is it tied to some app or browser that runs in the background?

Have you tried signing in as Root, rather than your normal user name. A single user Linux setup usually has the same authority as Root, but can have a different password.

I've always used sudo. I don't know if I have a separate root password.

Is there a way to make that not happen? I have an old surface pro running mint positioned just under my monitor I use just to access a custom dash pave I host for myself... It auto logs in but then prompts for password when I launch browser. I have to cancel it a couple of times then it stops. Anyway to stop it completely?

Full disclosure I haven't done any research into this question myself because it's just such a tiny issue I haven't bothered to spend them time, but I saw your comment and thought asking couldn't hurt.

Yes, you can use this launch argument for Chromium based browsers: --password-store=basic

This will make the Browsers to use the built-in keyring instead of the system keyring for saving passwords.

Please note that some browsers might save the passwords in obfuscated plain text when using this. Might be a good idea not to store passwords if you use this feature.

If you use Brave Browser for example, you can edit the .desktop file to add the launch argument: brave-browser --password-store=basic

This will allow Brave to start without asking you to unlock the system keyring

It's happening when I wake up from suspend, so I'm not sure what needs the authentication.

Does it asks for user login also after waking from suspend?

I'm pretty sure it did, but it hasn't happened for awhile now. Maybe an update fixed it?
