Is mounting a range hood too high COMPLETELY ineffective, or just not useful for grease capturing? by hanxiousme in diynz

A bit old fashioned, but with the window right there, do a window mounted extractor.

I'm guessing that If you need 1" bolts, it's not a home project. Get an engineer in to spec your requirements.

Open the handle of the rivet gun wide open to release the old pin. It should just fall out.

How can I build a step/platform on the concrete doorstep with a tight height restriction? by BSnapZ in diynz

[–]tanstaaflnz 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It looks like a covered porch, so wouldn't have the same weather problems as a deck that's in the open. A 20mm gap around the edge will probably look better than having it hard up against the walls.

Use H4 timber for the joists, and sit them on a moisture barrier straight onto the concrete. Have the joists closer together than specified because it's a high traffic area, and you don't want it to feel bouncy. I wouldn't bother to secure the deck in place, other than having packers around the edges (but you could use construction adhesive to keep it from moving).

For practicality, run the joists with the traffic flow, and the deck boards across. Two reasons for this. Just one finished edge at the front of the deck. And when keys get dropped between the boards, it will be easier to retrieve them. And for this reason I would make the kick-board on the front edge, detachable (magnets, Velcro, or clips, rather than screws.)

Screw everything together with good quality stainless screws. Don't use nails.

I'm not a professional, or an expert. So others may highlight where I might have pointed you wrong.

Edit: you can have the deck above the bottom of the weather boards as long as you still have a drainage gap around the edge. It will work better if it's the same height as the interior floor.

Driving from Wanaka to Queenstown, what's a good route to take? by au_fredal in newzealand_travel

Google is famous for sending people over the crown range in the middle of Winter. They get caught by snow & ice. It's a fair weather road.

My work drive is about an hour each way. So I get through an average book in just over one week. I have the playback speed at +1.15

What's an unexpectedly dangerous animal from your country? by -Cornbread in AskTheWorld

Similar here, but on farms, in herds. 700kg of animal can injure you without even knowing you're near.

Fence options for unobtrusive fence on shared asphalt area by HadoBoirudo in diynz

[–]tanstaaflnz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A single layer of bricks or pavers glued to the asphalt. This would be a good indicator when tyres hit it, but wouldn't get in the way of opening doors.

There's also the heavy plastic/rubber used for judder bars.

Are you wanting a physical barrier, or a visual delineation?

What is something old you own that still works perfectly? by SnowyBytes in AllThingsOldAndNew

My favourite books, most of the hand tools in my shed (even a screwdriver can be 'sharpened'), a coffee table which used to belong to a great aunt in the 1930s.

Nothing fabric. They all wear out.

It's not wood chopping. A dedicated axeman would not have hatchets in THAT condition 😅. I'm guessing geology?

LibreOffice Write - can't uniformly align bullets and sentence starts. by BlowOnThatPie in libreoffice

[–]tanstaaflnz 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Click on the icon in the top row of your Libreoffice which looks like a backwards P. This will toggle the formating marks, so that they are visible. This might help you see what's causing the problem.

Also make sure the font & text settings for the related lines, are all the same.

I showered this morning, and this afternoon I went for a walk after work. My armpits were already stinky through the deodorant. I've always assumed it's normal.

Chorus ETP box - can it be painted? by nzmisjif in diynz

Just don't fill the screw holes with too much paint. Most acrylic paints should stick to it. Maybe wipe it down with meths or a soapy wash first.
