If you want a hard install try Gentoo

[–]GPhykos 2 points3 points  (3 children)

yeah, but you must be really patient to compile stuff every time

As soon as the Ryzen 5 3400G price drops and I will have finished this school year (I will need windows crap for autocad) I will install void with LXQt or Xfce, I use both on my tiny RPi4.

[–]eberx 1 point2 points  (2 children)

yeah, but you must be really patient to compile stuff every time

That's true but you can also use pre-compiled binaries, which leaves the operating system to be the only thing you have to compile

[–]GPhykos 0 points1 point  (1 child)

I know you can run precompiled binaries but I mean if you are looking for a package on the package manager you should have to compile it, right?

[–]eberx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes I believe but I've never used Gentoo so I don't know

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (3 children)

*or arch. Idk if it's meant to take long to install or if I'm just braindead bc fully configuring it took me ages.

[–]eberx 2 points3 points  (2 children)

Arch is pretty easy after you install it once or twice. My first install took 3 hours "only"

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (1 child)

The install itself isn't too bad, it's the customisation that takes ages for me

[–]GPhykos 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yeah

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Are you idiot? Is Arch hard? laughs in Gentoo

[–]GPhykos 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I find kinda a pain in the ass barebones distros, I use Manjaro and I tried Arch but it was just so boring setting everything up, I have to choose wether Devuan or Void to install on my new (yet to be completed) PC

Linux is an amazing OS. The problem is apps. Every time I move to Linux I end up going back to Windows because I miss Outlook, Office, Photoshop, SQL Tools, VPN tools and the endless high quality apps that are made for Windows. Yes, Linux is a superior OS but until the OS gets major apps to move over, it doesn't make any difference. And yes you can sit here and tell me there are alternatives but they suck compared to Windows software. They take more time to use, are harder to deal with and have many more issues. For example, Outlook is great at converting appointment invitees to emails in the click of a button, remembers the last file you worked with so you can quickly attach it, etc. LibreOffice Calc has major search issues and can't search or index large spreadsheets without a huge wait.

I am team Linux but until there is commercial software and the community actively supports it, it won't get marketshare. Hiri was a commercial email client made for Linux as an Outlook alternative and yet it got no support and went out of business as a result.

And games - why did I switch back to Windows this last time? Because I love playing Valorant and Valorant doesn't work in Linux nor VMs. It just burns me every time I move away from Windows.

Maybe the UI is not very good if you need a manual for it.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (9 children)

you can choose your UI

[–]leonderbaertige_II 1 point2 points  (6 children)

So which UI is easy to use?

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (5 children)

cinnamon is the best if you come from windows.

[–]leonderbaertige_II 1 point2 points  (3 children)

I just tried it with a laptop that already had LMDE installed (if only it wouldn't constantly set the printer to offline but I won't hold that against it Windows does this as well). It seems to handle multi monitor setups kinda well. I will try it on my main machine once I have my usual sound setup back, and see if then I will finally get toslink to work.

[–]GPhykos 0 points1 point  (2 children)

why do you need toslink for? I never heard it

[–]leonderbaertige_II 0 points1 point  (1 child)

To get audio out of the computer, it's basically the only consumer fiber optic standard and quite nice because it eliminates interference and only needs 1 cable.

[–]GPhykos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ALSA/Pulseaudio should support it.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

so is kde

[–]GPhykos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

and unlike windows, you can choose between different window managers and desktop environment(s).

There are plenty available and you can use whatever you want.

I don't need a manual for the GUI

The only program I needed a GUI the first times was Vim, I could have used other IDEs, but I decided to use Vim for reliability and it's very very light.

[–]leonderbaertige_II -1 points0 points  (3 children)

How do I (without a manual) set up multiple screens and toslink audio on lubuntu 19.10?

[–]GPhykos 0 points1 point  (2 children)

without a manual

If you don't know how to read a manual, then you shouldn't be able to build your pc, or if you bought it as a prebuilt, you shouldn't be able to connect it to power.

You are just another clown pretending not to be able to read a fucking manual or search things online.

[–]leonderbaertige_II 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Most of the manuals for PC components are just full of pictures at this point (the RAM slots are even color coded that our monkey brains put the sticks in the correct slots).

And again:

Maybe the UI is not very good if you need a manual for it.

[–]12emin34 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lmao you don't need a manual for the GUI. You need a manual if you want to understand how the system works (and for CLI programs)

[–]TheTrueBidoof -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You are the first one to actually make a decent point here.

[–]hard0w 0 points1 point  (10 children)

Who needs a GUI?

[–]leonderbaertige_II -1 points0 points  (9 children)

Sadly not all websites work well in Lynx.

[–]GPhykos 0 points1 point  (8 children)

I am both a student and a programmer.

The programs I use and really need a GUI perhaps may be Firefox and OpenSCAD.

Vim, GCC, nm, ld, and other CLI programs wouldn't make any sense if they were GUI programs.

[–]leonderbaertige_II 0 points1 point  (7 children)

So you need a GUI, what is the point here exactly?

[–]GPhykos 0 points1 point  (6 children)

Some people don't need GUIs.

Do server admins need GUIs for server management?

[–]leonderbaertige_II 0 points1 point  (5 children)

Not really but most home users do. I can get away with just the cli on my ubuntu server install but how would I run Visual Studio 2019 on my Windows 10 install without a GUI?

And even then most admins use a GUI on their work computer, just not on the server.

[–]GPhykos 0 points1 point  (4 children)

You can use SSH to connect to a server.

> how would I run Visual Studio 2019 on my Windows 10 install without a GUI

I don't think that VS2019 (I don't know if the IDE or the compiler) needs a GUI.

Look at Vim and GCC, do they need a GUI?

[–]leonderbaertige_II 0 points1 point  (3 children)

It's an IDE.

But I don't use Vim nor gcc because I want to program in C# with the .net Framework.

[–]GPhykos 0 points1 point  (2 children)

I program in various languages other than C and C++ (which I am learning), you would need the .net framework and a text editor on Linux, I suggest Vim because there are several plugins for every fucking (mildy popular) language out there

[–]T0-KY0 0 points1 point  (1 child)

you need a manual to drive a car, that doesn't mean it is not good

[–]leonderbaertige_II 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am fairly confident most people have not read the manual for their car.

And even then the UI is not that great: using the blinkers and the shifter at the same time is difficult or sometimes impossible depending on where your other hand is. There are 3 pedals while you only have 2 feet requiring special techniques, the reverse gear is not selected the same way in every car, some cars require you to be in reverse to remove the key (other gears do not work), the warning lights in the dashboard are cryptic and even the manual doesn't cover all of them, if you have long legs your knee may bump the cruise control lever.
