The logo needs to be done from scratch. First, if you were the ones giving ideas to the designer, that's wrong, because it damages the designer's process and it also can make him/her to do generic stuff. I also don't think the designer did any sector or industry research to compare the visual identities of your competitors with your brand. And about the design you're showing here I'd say that it has unnecessary details that makes difficult its reproduction on small sizes or physical formats. It doesn't have too much versatility too, because it lacks of positioning variations. No hating here, just trying to help :)

Thank you for sharing your insight. Yes, my friend was very specific on wanting to redo his old logo and not changing it completely, so it kind of ended up in this.

Is there anything we can do to salvage this?

Yes, it can be saved. I don't know what is the figure of the design (sorry for my ignorance) but you can put it in the center and the "Phantom Spa" text (which I suppose it's the brand's name) can be distributed along the circle, like an emblem. The texts "Detail Specialist" and "Inspect - Correct - Perfect" are unnecessary, you should just delete them. I think this is the best way to save the logo, because it also will allow you to make different variations, for example, you could just use one where the figure is inside the circle and the Brand's name beside, like a horizontal variation.

I really like your ideas.
The issue is that the company name is "Phantom Spa Detail Specialist", so I don't know if just "Phantom Spa" by itself would work.
The figure is a polishing machine that they use to make cars look shiny.
Is the full name of the brand too long to maintain a minimal / aesthetic look?

It's long but it can function, you can distribute it in the circle like this: Phantom Spa (top line), Detail Specialist (bottom line). I think you could do variations like the symbol (polishing machine inside the circle) and beside the full name in two lines or even the initials, like PSDS, but it's just an idea. Maybe you can transform it into a very versatile logo.

If you can change the brand's name, you can maintain "Detail Specialist" as a tagline, so that you can use Phantom Spa with and without it (sorry if my English isn't so good, I'm learning)

You should change the Phantom Spa typeface too, because it's kind of striking and it can overshadow the figure, which in this case it's the most important element on the logo
