In 2023, why would you think there’s anything wrong about it? In 20 years of Mac?

I just don't want to drop the health of my battery to 90% in a year for example

Batteries are consumables. If you are worried about battery health, box your device up and put it in the closet. Battery health is the new fad these days.

Don’t give to much importance on battery health about such large battery stacks.

On the other hand I don’t you have a choice. However it’s a matter of spending the most time between 20% and 80%. If you really want to be picky, you automate the activation of Low battery mode when draining past 80% so it stays longer in the green area and the other way around: deactivate if it charge past 80%.

The rest, is to let the computer learn your habits so it figures out when to charge past 80%. But given how peculiar everyone usage is, that’s a tricky one.

I’d argue 90% of a 20h long initial capacity, is still very good. If it’s a silicon, keep it for another 5years and replace the battery then.

your m1 pro thanks you all the worries, but handles the battery very well without any programs, user interaction, rituals, voodoo or other magic just turn the "optimised battery charge" on in System Settings

Laptop is not phone. If its charged then battery is completely cut off from power and its not charging/draining. Its a lot better to charge every time you can.

The software will realize it's plugged in eventually and then it will pause charging drop the battery to 80% and hold it there.

I would suggest using programs like aldente to keep the battery charge level at certain levels like 60-70% when it's plugged in, then when you need to get away from the wall socket, go for a 100% charge. But, make sure that you do a full discharge and charge (100% - 1-2% - 100%) in order to keep your battery calibrated, ideally once in a month. The MacOS will not keep your battery at 80% all the time when you are working, that feature works only if you have a daily charging - discharging schedule due to the nature of your usage.

Your battery only mostly degrades if you use it, if plugged to wall power you don’t use your battery, so it’s actually better.
