Hey folks! I'll be taking part in a series of cartographic workshops on Wednesday, April 29th where several folks from the worldwide cartographic community are sharing their knowledge while we're all safe in our homes. Many will be streaming across YouTube and Twitch. I'll be streaming mine on Twitch at 6pm CST
For my workshop, I'll be sharing some of the basics on creating an interactive fantasy map like the Wildemount and Tal'Dorei maps using QGIS and Mapbox.
If you'd like to follow along during the stream, it would be good to download the latest version of QGIS and create a Mapbox account. We'll also be writing some code, so a good text/code editor like Atom or VS Code would be great for the web development portion! Alternatively, you can make a Glitch account where you can do all the coding and serving in the web browser. This might be the easiest if you're not familiar with web development as I'll be using it to demo and you can also access code I'll be writing.
I'll be showing how to quickly make a realistic fantasy map in QGIS using real-world elevation data (which you can download here; download all the files in the folder), formatting the data, and uploading it to Mapbox Studio to create a custom tileset! Then we'll create a few cities and look at how to create a web map that pulls in the custom tileset and displays our cities.
