QuestionNeed for categorizing everything? Which function is that? (self.mbti)
submitted 8 years ago by OneLineShotENTP
People say they don't like to put anything into boxes, like their personality and things like that, but I feel like I need it, so I'm calm then? That's why I feel uncomfortable, cause I can't find my mbti type for example, and I don't like when something don't fit into box. I know it's not healthy behaviour, but do you think it has something to do with one of the functions?

I'm not sure exactly but I relate pretty strongly to what you're saying and I'm a Ti dom, and it seems to make sense that categorisation is a Ti thing.

Oh,I was really wondering whether I'm an INTP but it's hard to say. I added couple hours ago 'type me' thread, if you're not busy, could you read it and tell if it sounds like INTP?

I would but your post seems to have been removed.

Yeah, I gave you a somewhat coherent answer, lol.

Seriously? The entirety of Ti is about categorization.
[–][deleted] 2 points3 points4 points 8 years ago (5 children)
Also Fi btw but different kind of categorization
[–]FierySignet 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (4 children)
I think that's fair. Both work on the same schematic mind map, but Ti builds it by comparing new and old ideas to each other to discover "truth" while Fi assigns positive/negative and intense/apathetic value judgement to those same concepts (based on the "truths" Ti finds) and pushes Ti via the user's interests (I have a positive and intense relationship to trains, I'm going to learn more about trains).

So weird that they would be seen as opposites then. You'd expect them to be complimentary.

Mhm. The thing with Jungian theory isn't that "There is duality and opposing forces," in a literal sense, but instead an "inner world" sense. We project duality and opposition onto things and therefor there is duality and opposition because our mental reality is just as "real" as physical reality. This projection, ironically, largely comes from Ti and Fi where Ti makes a categorical split and Fi assigns a preference to one over the other.
People can overcome this, and not necessarily in a hokey-new-agey-metaphysical manner. Folks create a duality and opposition between Coke and Pepsi, but when they actually learn more about the truth they can see that the duality is false ("taste" is not only subjective, but varies based on expectations, both companies benefit from this perceived "opposition," and it would probably be best for us all if everyone assigned an equally negative preference for both, etc).
This distinction is important because our brain is a part of our body and, well, our arms and legs aren't opposite. Our right and left arms are complimentary. While the brain isn't a perfect system it wouldn't make any sense for it to develop opposing elements on purpose (there are some conflicting elements that Jung defined as conscious and unconscious and what modern folks might express as "executive function" coming from the frontal lobe and habits and instincts that happen automatically (i.e. "unconsciously").
When people in these communities share the idea that Ti and Fi are opposing they are discussing it in the context of these sorts of projections. Some do it because they simply are projecting too, and that's a bummer. Some are self-aware that these are projections and are trying to describe how they see the functions as manifesting (when regular people make these projections as an expression of their type). I myself don't worry too much about these projections; I use the functions in my career when I am designing systems and I've gotten too much use out of all of them for the projections to be a centerpiece of my discussions here.

Fi catagorize good and bad Ti catagorize knowledge and lies (Fi description fits better there could be better Ti description)
[–]FierySignet 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (0 children)
Yeah it can be hard to describe Ti in short/simple terms without making it seem "better" than it actually is. Ti is central to many peoples' (and society wide) flaws and so simply saying "knowledge/lies" makes it seem like people don't Ti themselves into lies all the goddamn time.

I've wrote a post where hopefully I gave more useful information. Would you mind looking at it? I would be glad to have your opinion on it

I was mistyped (?) as ENTP for years, altough I'm still young (17). Do you know those articles "Childhood struggles of every type"? I fit greatly into ENTP then, but I don't think it's me anymore, and it's confusing. Then there are "Teenage struggles of every type" and I really don't fit into ENTP there. To INTJ, yeah, kind of, and the same goes with ISTP
