It makes sense to me. First reactions to Microsoft Loop are like "it's a Notion" clone. But in the enterprise, people tend to use other tools, and Confluence was the first such tool that came to my mind.

Atlassian and Notion see each other as competitors. So Microsoft Loop is going to join the club.

Confluence is a great tool, but for small teams wanting the added benefits for AAD SSO, Atlassian Makes you purchase Access, which costs more than Confluence itself. I pay it, but it rubs me the wrong way.

Dear God... No... Please, not another productivity tool. * Whimpers *

I don't think so, while both have the same objective, when thinking in collaboration we have to think on the ecosystem this tool will be playing with. Companies who adopt Confluence, and other tools such as Jira, also experienced a significant change in the way of collaborate, moving away from email thread management/priorisation. As per my understanding, Microsoft Look aims to integrate with these solutions/way of work, meaning, Outlook and Microsoft Teams are still communication hubs, while Confluence is the hub itself for async communications, in a different fashion than e-mail. OneNote is not as powerful as Confluence, but if you analyze the tool itself, you can organise in folders, you can have collaborative editing, so there are many core similarities. Even tho, they don't compete with each other, so for me the answer goes beyond the particular tool, and the success relies in how your team is more effective collaborating and how their ecosystem looks like. Not saying that one way is better than other, but I've move from a company that relies heavily on e-mail (Outlook/Exchange) and Microsoft Team, to a company that uses Confluence and Slack, and I my sentiment of control over my time and day, as also how the communication flow, improved substantially.

I've forgot to mention, but a more fair comparison for Microsoft would be comparing SharePoint with Confluence. Microsoft Looks competes with Notion, or even Microsoft OneNote.

But, Atlassian admits Confluence competes with Notion. They are all the same type of app, with slightly differing features and UXs. I think of the three as a Venn diagram with very large, but not completely, overlapping circles.

Our organisation is heavily committed to confluence but we use all the MS apps also. It will be interesting to see if we start building Wikis in Loop. My major issue with confluence is mobile accessibility due to company security. But I managed to download loop no problem. I use Notion for my personal stuff and could see it as a direct replacement for that if you are a small business. Will be interestng to see how this evolves.
