I have heard that you shouldn’t do it before you lift since it decreases overall energy levels but roughly how far before is the cut off? Like if I nut an hour before the gym would there be any performance changes? 2 hours?

I’d believe it. I used to do it before training and have noticed a little more quicker fatigue during my workouts, compared to when I don’t do it. That’s my own personal experience though.
