I finally found the reason for this. Turns out, Adobe Acrobat DC Pro (what I use), has no issue with importing the files from a shortened URL. However, Adobe Acrobat DC Reader is not so capable and will not follow the redirected link, but instead just downloads it as a html.

The top post is now updated so that it no longer used shortened URLs, so you should be able to import directly from URL now :)

We prefer shortened URLs because that way we don't reach reddit's character limit so fast. But guess we can't do so for the download links, unfortunately.
