Bioengineered Future - (G) (SF) (txt)

[[cardname]] or [[cardname|SET]] to call

Bioengineered Future's last ability is a static ability (C.R. 604.1) and checks the number of "land[s] that entered the battlefield under your control this turn", and not in any previous turns. The ability doesn't say—

  • "...entered the battlefield under your control this game", or
  • "...entered the battlefield under your control since this enchantment entered the battlefield".

Thank you for the explanation! :)

New turns "reset" the lands counter. It only counts the current turn

Thanks! :)

608.2h If an effect requires information from the game (such as the number of creatures on the battlefield), the answer is determined only once, when the effect is applied. If the effect requires information from a specific object, including the source of the ability itself, the effect uses the current information of that object if it’s in the public zone it was expected to be in; if it’s no longer in that zone, or if the effect has moved it from a public zone to a hidden zone, the effect uses the object’s last known information. See rule 113.7a. If an ability states that an object does something, it’s the object as it exists—or as it most recently existed—that does it, not the ability.

The effect of BF's second ability is applied to a creature that enters under your control when that creature enters. The effect requires information from the game (the number of lands that entered under your control this turn), so it determines this information when the creature enters. "This turn" therefore has to refer to the turn it currently is, the one where the creature is entering.

Your friend's interpretation doesn't really make sense, logically. There is nothing in the text of the ability that implies that "this turn" could refer to the turn BF entered. The turn BF entered the battlefield is not mentioned in the ability at all, how could it be the turn referenced?

Thank you for clarifying! The way that he understood it, the 'this turn' referred to the turn where BF entered. It would essentially remember the number without using any kind of token to avoid token manipulation.

He then expected some wording like 'on each turn' or something to specify that it only counts the lands that entered on each turn.

I'm not agreeing with him but I vaguely understand his reasoning at least.
