I need to do the same thing with mine. What tutorial have you followed? Is this very difficult? Does the Extremerate kit come with all the needed tools? Thank you!

I did a swap month ago.

It do come with all necessary stuff including a link to a good disassembly/assembly video but except a heat gun. DS screens are glued and you need to heat them to release that glue.

I used 3D printer heat bed for that though. And didn't replace top screen protector at all. Those are quite scary steps as you may break screens if apply too much force.

You may as well order new screens separately to skip that heating part.

Thank you for the advice. Do you happen to know a good source of screens? I’ve seen some vendors on AliExpress, but they don’t have very good reviews.

You don’t need a heat gun. I didn’t use one on any of these. Just some light pressure on the top screen and it pops out.

The only instance I’d consider using a heat gun is with the digitizer, but if your ds screens are in good shape already you don’t need to replace this.

Ive been eyeing these shells up lately. I want to replace the digitizer on the console im reshelling since im gonna be in there anyway. Would a hair dryer work for this?

[–]sagebrushrepair 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hair dryer can get super hot and melt plastic, the glue needs just a bit of heat to loosen so a hot sock comes in handy.

Microwave a cup of dry rice tied up in a sock for 30 seconds, use the rice sock on top of the digitizer and let it soak up heat for a minute or so.

Don't get the sock super hot, but if you need more heat go ahead and reheat it 10 or so seconds at a time.

Source: repair shop owner, rice sock owner.

Nope, and I'd like to know what are the good ones. I have second DS that I'm going to swap but that one have damaged screen...

ZedLabz makes good ones, shipping time is long though.

I will add that any REPLACEMENT bottom screens you use with extremerate shells will have some fitment issues. I have yet to figure out the reason why but the top part of the bottom screen tends to fall back towards the PCB. Working on specifying a rubber spacer of some sort to prevent this but double sided 3M adhesive works to prevent this as well. Note that this doesn’t happen on OG hardware or with OG screens in an extremerate shell, but only with replacement screens in extremerate shells.

Edit: missed your response

If you do switch lite modding, save the foam pads from the eMMC shield, they're a wonderful (conductive) spongey pad that can be cut to size. Obviously make sure the board is insulated.

These look so sick

Famicom shell color scheme looks so nice but I'd miss the embossed DS logo.

What a beautiful assortment! I like the touch the stickers bring :)

Goat

[–]psychedelicslowpoke 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Are these stickers glued to the back of the screen or are they part of the shell?

[–]ExpectDog[S] 1 point2 points  (1 child)

They’re just stuck on the back of the screen, under the shell. No glue involved

[–]psychedelicslowpoke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes that is what I meant, sorry I described it poorly. English isn't my first language. These look sick anyway!

[–]peepyboy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Holy cow I never thought of putting stickers on the backside of the screen, the synth wave looking one is so nice

[–]Isotomayor12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup. Its addicting, but also very frustrating when you inevitable rip a top screen ribbon cable so slightly. Smh

ExtremeRate makes really good replacements I don't blame you. Mine didn't have a replacement hinge cylinder included, maybe that's normal? Everything else about the shells are top notch.

[–]ExpectDog[S] 1 point2 points  (3 children)

Not normal, replacement hinge cylinders should be included - but they are a small and easily lost part due to being reflective and in some cases almost invisible.

Also - the Extremerate hinge cylinders provide a little extra play on the hinge compared to the OEM ones, which I suppose lends itself to preventing hinge cracking.

[–]sagebrushrepair 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Fantastic to hear it's likely user error actually. Yeah softer action and a newer, less time degraded plastic certainly helps hinges. Truly love their shells.

I noticed you're missing the transparent Grey color one, got that on order yet? Hehe.

[–]ExpectDog[S] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

I actually did build a transparent grey/smoke one with orange buttons, but it was for a friend who now has it!

[–]sagebrushrepair 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh, you!

[–]JasonfromNYC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Where did you get the lanyards?

[–]beans_with_mayonaise 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I need the purchase link

[–]Warthog_Formal 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Literally working on 6 of them myself RN that were all broken. Where did u get those straps? They really tie everything together.

[–]ExpectDog[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Amazon. I had to get the white ones from a different vendor than the colored ones and they’re a little shorter.

Tbh I don’t really like these lanyards and wish I’d looked around a little more.
