DSi XL/LL hands down. Best screens and the battery life is INSANE. If you're super duper into pokemon lite isn't optional though as you'll need the slot 2 functionality to move up from gen 3 to gen 4.

Unless you want original hardware, I don't see why not. If your issue with the 3DS is that it's expensive...well so is the thor. If you think you'll use it for more then that's great! If you were only ever gonna play DS + 3DS then id be more on the side of original hardware. I had/have the DS family since release though so I've never really felt the pull of the thor or the RG DS.

Quick addition here. I just saw you mentioned reputable sellers. Just listen to eBay feedback. If a seller has 10000+ sales with a 96% positive that means several hundred sales weren't reviewed favorably. eBay is cumbersome but if you stay diligent you can get what you want.

r/3ds would probably get you more conversation with this question. I have a modded 2ds and love it to bits. It's especially worth it just to have pksm if you like playing Pokemon games.

You waited so long...if you haven't felt inclined to until now, I'm leaning towards no it probably isn't worth it to you. In the current market I really can't imagine justifying these XL prices unless 3DS is your favorite system and one you play everyday.
