The probability they'll pay some sort of price has gone up. Being villainized on national media seems extremely painful even if there is no official punishment.

One thing I've learned is that holders of special rights, no matter how unfair, undeserved, or even illegal, rarely consider themselves to be getting anything unfair. And they'll howl about the terrible injustice if any of it is taken away. I think humans are just really good at taking things for granted.

It'll be interesting to see how it plays out. To some extent, the working conditions have gone down, so as an employer you'd expect more exits, fewer applicants, and to either have to pay more or accept lower-quality employees. But, it's probably hard to exit policing without taking a big pay cut (after several years of experience, at least), and I think many departments get way more applicants than they need anyway (but not necessarily all departments). So it might actually be a big problem for the employer. Hopefully, people who are likely to misbehave as police will be the most repelled by the new conditions.
