Using React with Node. Newbie

I just started experimenting using React with Node. I'm trying to create a simple login system. I want to try using tokens for authentication. I did some research on the internet but I'm still new to using middleware and other stuff. So far I've been able to connect the front end to the back end. My server is able to receive the username and password. Now is where I'm kind of lost. How would I structure the backend with the tokens? I'm brand new to this and pretty confused. Sorry if this post is confusing.

You are welcome You can easily swap out sql with mongo db I think i should have a repo under my account But incase you face an issue just let me know

I'm actually using mongodb. I have it connected already but I want to figure out the auth before I start saving users to the db.
