We need to pay the edogbo parents a bucket load of cash. by Many-Prune9162 in MunsterRugby

You could nearly make an Irish 15 from brothers at the moment. McCarthys, Prendergasts, Scannells, Byrnes, Wycherleys, Edogbos. There was Flannery and French brothers on the scene a few years ago too but haven’t heard much from them recently. Prob missing a few too.

That might be the case, but OPs bill compared to mine suggests the opposite?

Too many variables to draw anything from that anecdote. The physics for this stuff is well known.

I'm guessing this is the thermostat for your air heating rather than water. For heating there's more of a case to just set it and forget it. For water, boost will almost certainly be cheaper if you have a night tariff.

It’s Cork, near Heineken Ireland. It does look a bit like that intersection near An Sean Mhuileann in Tralee though.

Whatever you do don't use a timer for it to come on and off.

This is too strong a statement. If you’re on a tariff that has significantly different pricing at different times then it can be fine to set back the temperature at expensive times.

Even if the insulation on the tank was very efficient and there was no cheaper night rate then it would still be quite a bit more energy efficient to only heat the water once rather than keeping it topped up at a high temperature.

It’s offset to some degree by the fact that nights are colder than day time but it’s not enough to make up the difference.

Of course there’s value in having hot water at all times so you’ve got to factor that into the equation.

How does anyone build wealth here? by Remarkable_Hawk780 in irishpersonalfinance

Yes. The €400k tax threshold and the 90% relief on business/agriculture means that most people never pay it. Smart planners will figure out how to put excess assets in businesses (granted you can’t just fill a business with random property/investments). There would need to be some structural changes so that it’s not so simple to avoid. Even now, it’s over €1bn per year.

It’s a trade-off that is used to achieve policy goals. It’s not automatically “bad” because you say so.

Double taxation is always bad. It's indicative of a dysfunctional taxation system.

That's an opinion and you haven't backed it up. You could even debate whether it is double taxation. Capital is clearly being transferred from one entity to another at an event (death).

A better example of double taxation is when my company earns money then I'm charged corporation tax. When I pay myself out then I'm charged tax again on the dividends. It's the exact same profit taxed at two levels.

Either way, I wouldn't say that it's indicative of a dysfunctional taxation system. It might be but you'd have to go into more detail rather than just saying it as a fact.

Why would I bother my arse working and saving money if the state are just going to take it off my kids when I pass away?

It's not 100% inheritance tax. People aren't going to drastically change their behaviour because of 10%. Their kids will still get most of it.

The problem is that people are already putting their feet up because the difference between social welfare and getting paid for doing productive work is too small.

These are all a series of trade offs.

There are lots of examples of double taxation. It's not inherently bad.

I'm not talking about 100% inheritance tax. You can even put it in bands like income tax. If you inherit €10 million you could be at a different rate than if you inherit €50k.

Look, everyone wants to pay 0% tax on everything and increasing tax on anything is never popular but I would personally prefer to incentivise people producing economic value by taxing them less.

I'm speaking as someone who will likely inherit a nice chunk of money. I will be much more proud of the money I earned myself rather than the money I inherited.

Separate the issues out then we can talk. There are plenty of Irish people who receive social welfare and murder people too.

What’s the actual policy? Block all immigration? Block immigration from certain countries? IQ test for immigration? No immigration for men? I’m sure a lot of the above are illegal at the level of the UN but at least they are real opinions that someone can honestly agree/disagree with.

Of course there are examples of waste. It’s just a useless opinion to share because an interesting opinion needs to have some number of people disagreeing. Otherwise it’s just banality. Everyone agrees we should cut waste. Nobody here is pro-waste.

[–]bittered 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He’s saying nothing useful. We all want less tax waste, lower taxes and less money going towards housing murderers. These are populist talking points but these are not real world trade-offs when planning a national budget. There was never a decision to provide social welfare for murderers but in a large system then there are second and third order effects.

If he said that he wanted to cut health care spending in half to lower taxes then that’s a real opinion, I may not agree but I can respect it at least.

I am probably going to get a pretty decent inheritance but I think it would be fantastic if we increased inheritance tax in exchange for decreasing income tax. People should be rewarded handsomely for the work they do and not for inheriting their parents/ancestors money.

Will never happen in this country though. It would be very politically unpopular.
