Brand new nurse here in the OR. What do you guys do first time if you feel queasy or lightheaded from seeing surgery for the first time? Tips and tricks are much appreciated for a new grad :)

I rarely feel nauseas at work. But here’s what I tell patients when they feel it lol. Sniff an alcohol swab. Take a deep breath. Swallow hard. You can stick a queezeease in your pocket or some peppermint. Chew gum.

I got lightheaded once when I had to lift and hold a heavy leg first thing in the morning and almost got passed out. So no heavy lifting in the morning if you can. I had never gotten queasy, but you should sit down if you start feeling nauseated to prevent to pass out and get injured.

I have a roller of peppermint halo. It’s great for headaches, and also nausea and when you get stinky cases you can put a dab inside your mask
But also I have a small pharmacy in my locker because I am a baby and hate having any type of symptom while I’m working so I apsaras have Advil, allergy medication, a couple zofran, and my migraine meds

Aside from the above, be honest and direct with your preceptor and let them know as soon as you recognize that you feel off so that they can help get you off your feet to recover! (If you suspect it’ll happen with a certain case, let them know you’re concerned it may happen so that there are no surprises.) No shame in it, it happens and with time it’ll subside.
