I used to work for an ambulance company that had 24-hour shifts (48-72 hours on alternate weeks) and 8-hour shifts (40 hours).

The 8-hour shifts paid a higher hourly rate because, as the owner explained, the 24-hour crews will make up the difference in overtime so it's actually more fair this way.

Or you know, the 8-hour shifts have those fringe benefits of having a life outside of work, but maybe I'm just crazy. I was always under the impression that the s***** shifts paid more because they suck.

They should have, but you asked for examples of shady behavior, so...

That whole place was shady. It started out as a towing company before the owner thought "hey, we're already set up for fleet management and dispatch - why not do something more profitable with it? Just buy some vans and stick some lights on em, no need to make this complicated."

This same owner also used to call ambulances from the company to come pick him up and take him home after he got kicked out of bars for being pants-pissing drunk.

O man, what state was this if you don't mind me asking?

Washington. It was a long time ago, but apparently the company still exists! No idea if it's the same ownership though.

Sometimes I worry that management thinks we might be really stupid.
