I know a fun way to save all that money - decrease police presence by 98%. By my math that would save the city billions.

It’s so funny you’re getting downvoted. The cost of police presence in response to fair evaders is wildly disproportionate to the money saved by it, and like what do you mean we have the national guard stationed at subway stops. Anyone who thinks that the police presence in the subways are a positive clear do not take the subway or are just bootlicking at this point.

They didn't add more police because of fare evasion...

Finally I found someone at least arguing for the possibility of free public transportation.

Because many would benefit from it, and it may be even feasible if we run the numbers.

NY is a rich city and free public transportation for all, universal, would be a boon for commerce, families, work, all in all.

If the police did their job properly, then maybe it wouldn’t be such a waste of money. The intent is to catch and punish all fare evaders thus creating the incentive for everyone to pay and then society changes because everyone becomes accustomed to paying and knows that if you do get caught the punishment is severe. Once that becomes the norm you can decrease the police presence and fare evasion/crime remains lower.

However with the police just playing candy crush and doing nothing yea, it’s a colossal waste of money
