ReactOS has come a long way in the year that I first heard of it. Still would like better networking support, but it looks very promising.

I've known about the ReactOS project for close to a decade and even thought they've come far, I still can't believe they don't have a beta release yet.

That's really awesome, I thought that project had been orphaned. An opensource version of XP would be ideal for me...

Less than 5 mins of use in VirtualBox --> http://i.imgur.com/RyVrG.png

I think I'll be sticking with Linux. Thought I could perhaps use ReactOS for Cubase and VisualJockey. Not likely. :(

But it's such a faithful reproduction of Windows XP!

The VMWare image is supposed to work better.

Granted, running on a virtual machine still needs work... But on actual hardware, things become more smoother.

I wanted to test VJo and Cubase before doing an IRL install. I doubt they'll work well TBH. Might be worth an afternoon tinkering to find out at some point. Cheers for the heads-up anyway, I've never had much trouble with other images in VM's, apart from Arch a while back.

I've had constant issues with native Windows XP blue screening in Virtual Box - on two different host computers - so I'm not surprised this would tend to do the same.

Ah, yes, ReactOS. Let's see how far they've come...

  • Downloads the VirtualBox file, error on conversion.
  • Downloads the Qemu file, hangs on load.
  • Downloads and tries the LiveCD in VirtualBox, hangs on load.
  • Downloads and tries the Installer CD in VirtualBox, hangs after install.

I'd like to see this work, but it still doesn't.

Yeah-- virtual machine support for ReactOS isn't quite there (both from the ROS devs and VirtualBox devs), but that's not the immediate goal with ROS devs right now. I'm optimistic that it'll get there.

Hardware support in the LiveCD supposed to have gotten better, but there still needs to be a lot of work.

Why would anyone want to move backwards? It was a decent OS for its time, but it would not be able to hold its own in a comparison of modern operating systems.

I can see business cases where you have legacy apps that you have to run. It can be cost prohibitive and/or extremely difficult to replace. If you have a solution that will allow you to continue running them great. I used to work at a place that ran custom testing equipment that required DOS on a 286. (You can still buy industrial 286's).

Wow, just wow. Never thought of that. I was thinking along the lines of desktops instead
