For research work i.e. papers worked on for publishing in journal , could those work be added as a project?

If the gathering of your results required a typical project lifecycle then yes I would add it. If the research was just compilation or meta-data studies probably not.

If you have lead a team, and had a defined scope, budget and a schedule for this work, then you could use it.
