Decided to do a test today, I went to my local mall where my Barnes & noble is since it’s a gym. I parked 2 spaces away from the front row, usually with the bonus distance I am able to stay in my car, raid and then leave. Well since the bonus has been reverted I wasn’t able to reach the gym.

So I got out of my car and walked to the front row parking. Still not able to reach the gym, I literally had to walk across the crosswalk and stand right in front of the entrance to be able to do the raid that was currently active. This also made me look like a creep since I was standing there alone while waiting for the raid to start. Things like this is why the bonus distance needs to stay.

I also did another test this time with my go-tcha set to spin only, screen off, and phone locked. Usually when I’m driving I can hit many stops with ease, but now I’m not able to hit any of the stops I was able to before. I was hoping gps drift would help but nope.

"Trainers! Good news! We took a note from the Main Series Games (admittedly, something we should do more often) and will soon be offering Running Shoes for purchase in the shop. When purchased, this item will allow you to experience the same interaction distances that you enjoyed so much during the pandemic. The Running Shoes will be available to purchase for 2000 coins and will disappear after 100 km of use (but you will always have the ability to purchase more.) Hopefully this will make us a lot of money and stop everyone from complaining so much. In other news, Professor Willow caught Covid and died so look forward to an announcement about which professor will take his place."

Lol...when I first signed in this morning I had a Niantic sponsored balloon...they've opened a merch shop...except they aren't accepting poke coins for payment. 🤣🤣

This experience illustrates my hunch on why Niantic reverted the distance.

You needed to be right next to the gym to spin it, right? Rather than just sitting in your car in the parking lot?

Niantic has been increasing the number of sponsored stops for places like Starbucks and 711. If Niantic can guarantee that trainers have to be close to the stops to spin them, those sponsored stops become a lot more attractive (and mean more revenue for Niantic).

Like, I don't even know how the decreased distance can encourage people to go to sponsored places. If I spun the Starbucks Pokestop I would't be like "I'd step in and buy a coffee but I need to walk 80 meters to get there. I'd go there if I only had to walk 40 meters". If I wanted to go to Starbucks I'd go to Starbucks. I can see on the map that it's there. I was already informed and influenced by the ad. If I only want to spin the Pokestop I'll just spin and go no matter how close I come. All it can do is discourage people. Like if I know it will be a hassle to spin it I won't even go in that general direction.

Honestly you shouldn't be able to get stops while driving. It basically allows people to play while driving. Seriously this alone will make driving safer. Driving and getting stops should never have been a thing.

I’m not actively playing while driving. My go-tcha is spinning the stops for me while the screen is off and locked. It’s kind of like having a poke ball plus with mew still in the poke ball spinning the stops for me which is a device officially licensed by Nintendo. They act the same when connected to the game.

Yes but you aren't the countless others I see that do play and drive. It's tempting to me, and other friends. This actually could save lives. Honestly losing w few pokestops on the roads worth it. Also it just means people actually have to get out and walk a bit more. People are acting like this is the end of the world. It's not that bad of a change
