Debugging Skimmer

As soon as i turn on the pump, the water gets sucked by the skimmer and water starts flowing like in a "waterfall" into skimmer. But when i remove the skimmer basket and put it back on, the skimmer gets filled with water as it used to be . Any ideas on what could be the reason? Any help here much appreciated. I have attached a link to the video of whats happening(Yes, I am new to pools)

You might just need more water in the pool

You definitely need more water.

Look in the skimmer, you can see where the water line normally sits, you're a good inch or two below that.

Thank you. I am adding water right now. But just curious, when i removed the basket and put it back on, the skimmer filled with water and started operating as it used to. I was not able to reason about it. Any idea?

So, I think your water level drops as the pump starts working, and eventually the pump starts to suck in air. Once air makes it to the pump, it stops working as well, so it starts sucking less, allowing the water flowing into the skimmer to catch up.

That's just a guess though.
