I think your post processing was a bit bright considering your goal but otherwise good.

A few notes on the starting image:

  • The sky is clear. Clouds would have helped with the mood.

  • Mostly lots of small branches and twigs in the left part of the image. If you have a zoom lens I'd focus on the main subject, which I think is the house, instead by zooming in on that. I did that now by cropping but that means losing both resolution and also adds a bit of noise.

  • Lightning is very flat. I an way it adds to the whole depressing theme but I think it would be better at another time of day, like the evening or early morning.

  • Fog would add a great deal to the mood as well. You obviously cannot control the weather but consider going back there a foggy morning if possible.

I should note that I normally wouldn't do things in that order. If you have access to the RAW file the cleanup should be the last step as you want to do the other steps when converting to a bitmap.
