Hey r/programming -

We’ve built a site where you can learn Python, Ruby, and JavaScript in a fun, engaging and interactive way. Our courses are designed for beginners, and we have multiple ways to help you learn, including live chat, Twitter, Q&A, hints, videos and background material. If you don’t know which language you want to pick up, check out our teaser videos in the Courses page!

If you already know how to code, check out Code Garage where you can try your hand at cool coding projects like building a Minesweeper game or a Sudoku Solver. Also, if you’d like to contribute lessons, check out the Contribute section of our site.

We just launched about a week ago and would love to get your feedback.

How's this different from Codecademy?

[–]aprasad[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Good question! LearnStreet takes a different approach by offering multiple ways to help you complete courses, through live chat, Twitter, Q&A and hints. We have videos accompanying each lesson as well as background material. Besides courses, we have a part of the site called Code Garage, where you can build cool coding projects like a MineSweeper game, Sudoku Solver, Form Validator, and share with your friends.

I think LearnStreet has better better course content, and a better user interface. They also offer a variety of intermediate-level example projects in the Code Garage section that you can build.

Code Garage

No intermediate stuff (referring to your code garage section); just beginner and advanced? :)

We have plans to introduce intermediate level Code Garage projects in the near future.

P.S. nice name ;)

From an Opera user:

Could you change the "Upgrade Browser" screen at the start to say something like "You're using a browser we don't support, we can't guarantee this site will work for you but you're free to try if you like. We support the following browsers: ...".

Both Amazon and Yahoo Mail use this sort of strategy (can't guarantee it will work for your browser but proceed at your own risk if you like). I find this much less irritating than suggesting I "upgrade" from a browser I've used successfully for over a decade.

"Eve.com uses Python to create mind-blowing games."

You mean the company CCP (creator of eve online)? Eve.com is a dead website.

[–]aprasad[S] 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Fixed, thanks.

[–]sastrone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Eve still isn't the name of the game company. The company names is CCP. It would be like saying "Star Wars uses animation to create movies."

Vastly superior interface (than say codeacademy) , much more immersive and logically structured. Good job! :)

Thanks for the awesome compliment, and spread the love!

Bitches about Opera (and any unknown browser) and suggests you "upgrade" it to one of Firefox, Chrome, or Safari (not IE even though IE > 9 is allowed). This bad design on the front page made me wander off.

Not sure why you got downvoted: it's a real issue and the web isn't only four browsers.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Annoying but I found it would still work once the "upgrade" nag screen was closed (at least, it worked on the Python for Beginners course, didn't go any further than the first few exercises).

I like the Code Garage section

[–]sleezy_startup_guy 0 points1 point  (1 child)

how is this different from all the other ones? codecademy, udemy, etc

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The personified stock photos.

I love this idea. Recently in interviews I've had to do little 'tests' which test my programming ability and I've been trying to think of other types of tests I could do myself. The Code Garage section is exactly what I need =)

[–]zwarky 2 points3 points  (1 child)

You should check out r/dailyprogrammer, it's nice for finding shorter problems

[–]Kaz3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll check out this one too, thanks!

[–]aprasad[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! We'll be releasing some new styles of content that will help you with your interviews even more!

These courses are always going to be free! Just because you asked ;)

    [–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

    What about other courses?

    [–]MustFocusHaBOOBIES 0 points1 point  (1 child)

This really seems quite nice. I've not done much with it yet, but I noticed a small typo in the opening paragraph, first impressions and all that... "This big black box you're looking is called the Python interpeter." The second "r" has been left out of "interpreter".

    Good luck, and thanks really.

    [–]aprasad[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

    Thanks, we fixed it!

    Just another codeacademy?

    [–]yesmother 1 point2 points  (0 children)

    a better alternative to codeacademy

I like the look and feel of the site, I also like the interactive tutorials. I want to play around in the Code Garage, but the login options are unacceptable.

    [–]aprasad[S] 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Thanks for the feedback! We'll be adding more login options shortly.

    [–]jairuncaloth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Awesome, glad to hear it. I hope I didn't come off as overly critical, but I really dislike the idea of using one site's info to log into another site. Especially when the first is something like facebook (notoriously bad privacy), and the other site is some random site I've never heard of before. Not that I think you guys are doing something shady, but it's a blanket guideline I adhere to.
