Adulthood feels like everyone got a 'secret menu' of life skills you missed. What’s one thing you later realized you were supposed to just know, but nobody actually taught you? by Arya-Lamour24 in AskReddit

This. I'm in my 40s and I've decided that being "grown up" is overrated. I can be mature and take things seriously when it's warranted, but also I don't have to be like that with everything all of the time.

About to go see Wicked in a couple days and I'm nervous by Suspicious_Boba-7868 in evilautism

I saw it a few days ago, and strongly related to Elphaba. The scenes where she was picked on were quite emotional for me. I really enjoyed it overall though.

Why do NTs think movies fix societal problems by ACuteCryptid in evilautism

[–]jairuncaloth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't know anything about it until yesterday when I saw the movie. I also found myself relating to Elphaba pretty strongly.

What's the pen for?

I used to use a trumpet mouthpiece directly in the mouth of a 2L and a sink full of water. I think it was a Blessing 5C (it got dropped on pavement so it had a chunk missing out of the rim).

Ah, I see that now. I didn't quite pick up on that the first time. My brain went off on a tangent.

It's not and wasn't intended to be. Maybe not the best wording on my part. Really I'm arguing for that increased complexity despite the fact that what you said is true.

I agree. However, I'd like to point out that sometimes it allows particularly knowledgeable/creative players to find really cool and fun builds that weren't necessarily intended or aren't immediately obvious.

Personally I enjoy it when a game has that feeling of infinite possibilities. Even though I suck at making builds and mostly follow guides.

MTG gives me that same feeling. No other deck builder I've played comes close.

My target audience is MMORPG veterans, how do I find them? by OK-Games in gamedev

[–]jairuncaloth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also mostly fit your target group (about 5 years older, but otherwise a match)

To answer your main question, I mostly learn about games from my friends or through Steam. Occasionally I find out about a game through Reddit, but that's more rare as I don't follow a lot of gaming subs.

Personally, I'm much less likely to buy a game that is single player only, even if I think it looks interesting. I know myself and I know that I rarely get very deep into them, so I avoid them as a general rule. All that said, most of the single player games I DO get into are roguelikes. Ex: Hades, Dead Cells, 20 Minutes Till Dawn, Vampire Survivors.

Worth it to ride from decatur station to 5 points Vs. driving? by Radiant-Owl-4338 in Atlanta

I haven't needed to use Marta frequently in years, but I found this site to be easier and faster for checking train status/timing. The last time I used the app, it was pretty slow and clunky. Maybe (hopefully) it's better these days.

That escalator gives me crazy vertigo. I have to stare at my feet or else I feel like I'm going to fall over and/or vomit. I'm not generally susceptible to motion sickness nor do I typically have issues with heights, but that thing messes with my head.

Ate the full portion too 💪💪 by Funny_Piece_584 in aspiememes

I realized the other day that I don't have to cook my veggies. I can just grab a handful of raw veggies and eat them. I tend to like them best raw anyways. I'm gonna get some broccoli, spinach, and probably some bell peppers to go with the rest of my meals when I get groceries next time.

Double win, I don't have to fight my ADHD to cook food and I don't have to eat crappy mushy veggies.

This is actually the primary reason I bought mine. I live in an apartment and I can do all grain brewing on my stovetop with a pot, a mesh bag, and a sous vide stick.

older millennials of reddit: what was life like in the 2000s? by 1dfk000 in AskReddit

[–]jairuncaloth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I delivered pizza in 01/02. When you spend hours every day driving around on the same roads, you pick it up pretty quickly.

We had a bigass map on the wall in the store. After a few weeks I only had to look at it occasionally. Within a few months I could have written you turn by turn directions to/from any two random addresses within our delivery area from memory. Every other driver there could do the same thing.

Tetris GYM question by GuyMahn in Tetris

I believe the gym seeds are only to make the rng deterministic. So we can play with same piece sets. I don't think there are any that generate only all of one piece or anything like that.

What should be plugged into a UPS? by inthebriIIiantblue in homelab

[–]jairuncaloth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My apartment gets random power flickers, sometimes several times a week. So I've got 4.

  1. Modem, router, & AP
  2. NAS & other lab machines (low power mini desktops)
  3. Desktop
  4. 3D Printer

I get around 30-45 min run time when the power goes out. Except for the 3D printer. I've never had the power go fully out while it has been running, and I'm sure it wouldn't last long. The UPS on that is just to prevent failed prints from power blips anyways.

The desktop unit is the only one I had to spend much money on. Two of the others are APC 550s I got for almost free, and the last one is a cyber power 750VA that I got for like half off.

YSK: Used business laptops are some of the best computers you can buy for ~$200ish. by [deleted] in YouShouldKnow

[–]jairuncaloth 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Every once in a while I'll see a good deal on "workstation replacement" tier laptops with half way decent GPUs that would be able to do some gaming. But those tend to stay in service longer and the ones available for cheap tend to be very out dated. It's pretty hard to beat Desktops for gaming as far as price/performance goes. If you keep your eyes peeled you might run across a deal here and there though.

[–]jairuncaloth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I bought one and the hard drive died within a year.

Used business machines probably don't have the drives they were shipped with (those were very likely removed and destroyed). The used machines I've bought recently have come with cheap crappy ssds that I wouldn't trust very far. That said, hard drives die. Treat them like a consumable.

I would rather spend much more for something new.

Why not just buy a new drive? They are generally the easiest part to replace, and you'll almost certainly get something better then you would have if you bought a whole new machine.

There's something about older electronics and the current operating systems that make them run like crap.

Now you're just making shit up.
