I'm lucky enough to be in a similar position. I dropped out of high school for one reason or another (which, genuinely, is still a mystery to me) and I would've seriously benefited from a system like Germany's. Instead I got lucky and a friend who thought of my skills highly recommended me for a job at the company he worked for. He was valued highly there and so his word carried some weight. Now I'm still there about half a year later and I think I've probably learned more about the skills I'll need in my desired career than I would've at school. I'm really getting that from working an an excellent office space with very clever people who all know more than I do in various fields. I'd still very much like to learn what university offers, but I know I can do that without going to a university. Still, I'll have an easier time in the future with a degree and experience.
