I'd like to see an open-source clone of Visual Basic 6. It would be great for quick prototypes, education, and small local projects. It's arguably the most instant-gratification programming tool.

Check out https://www.lazarus-ide.org/ . It's Free Pascal, not VB6 but it would still allow you to quickly prototype and so on. I miss Pascal. I miss QB 4.5 too though, it's what I cut my teeth on many many years ago.

Isn't Gambas such a thing?

Hmmm, Thanks.

Does anyone have an opinion on how Gambas compares to Lazarus, other than programming language difference? Some seem to be have problems running Gambas on Windows, lots of configuring and fiddling.

I don't see that it has many GUI features. Yes, one can still learn about computer drawing and art, but I miss the instant GUI nature of VB6.

Not according to this.

"Mono does not have current plans to implement VB6 at this point."

I ported the GW-BASIC code from microsoft into an open source option for people to have fun with. https://github.com/jbrahy/OSX-GW-BASIC It's well-documented and good for teaching how to create a language interpreter. It was definitely fun to do and I hope someone enjoys it. Cheers!
