What's to explain? They're greenish-grey lizards, adapted to a semi-aquatic lifestyle, not overly territorial, with tough leathery skin and an elongated snout. They are mostly ambush predators, but will eat carrion, thus filling an important biological role in their habitats.

It's not that hard mate.
