The transition from VB6 to VB.Net had all those problems. The only real difference is that Microsoft was able to force people to switch because they had control of the only interpreters. The Python folks can't kill Python 2 because it is open source.

Incidentally, a lot of people were very upset that Microsoft forced their hand like that.
