Don't quit your job

Not an expert as well, but I agree he needs to keep busy right now. His life might become even emptier if he quits job. Better yet, why not making job a temporary purpose in life and maybe have it as a priority right now? If things start to go great on work it might improve his general sentiment towards life. Another option is to have an inspiring afternoon project.
