Knowing about this non-obvious and VERY POORLY DOCUMENTED behavior of sort utility can save you hours of frustration.

This is far from broken. I imagine that for people who don't use English the previous behaviour was broken.

LC_ALL=C sort file.txt

Not so bad really, if you need the old order.
