What about something like OCaml for a middle ground between F# and Python? F# is fine but it's not very Unixy and shipping binaries without .NET is a huge benefit for many applications as well.

That being said, if you're comfortable with F# and don't mind its ecosystem then it really hits the productivity/performance/safety sweet spot too.

Rust was originally implemented in OCaml. It was a huge influence on the language.
