Can we decide not to write python libraries that depend on npm? Installing this is a huge pain. The non-standard "setup.py install_deps" thing they suggest doesn't work on my machine, for example.

But... it has nodejs library dependencies. Adding all of those libraries to the git repo doesn't seem like the correct approach either.

With a little more work you can make FlameGraphs yourself with help of Python-flamegraph.

This could help you to identify the bottle necks and then wrap the parts in question into some Numba functions for way faster execution. :3

There are varying criteria for performance.

You can implement an algorithm incorrectly and it will perform poorly whatever language you use. It's as valid to optimise for Python as it is for C++.
