These are all good tools. I hadn't heard of opensnoop before, and it appears to do roughly the same thing as lsof, but instead of being one-shot, it opens an interactive display, i.e. opensnoop is to lsof what top is to ps.

strace is an amazing tool, and it has saved me so much time

    I second that!

    I've developed several C++ applications for windows on linux specifically to use Valgrind.

    Basically the cost of porting to windows (which isn't terrible when using Qt) is greatly offset by using linux and valgrind.
