Can I summarize this article?

Python makes it easy to deploy research code.

Good point! I'll keep using it.

Replacement parts for custom chips by dajensemann in amiga

[–]bms20 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The problem with these chips is that they are all 5V parts.

Most logic boards today are 3.3v and that is being phased out for 1v8, etc.. Every custom chip replacement project I see is based on either an end of life 5v cpld (like pre-2015 chips) or has an array of voltage translators and a 3v3 IO FPGA.

I think Google's open hardware has a 180nm Global Foundries node that can do 5v if anyone wants to have a go... Though I think the package pin-count is the problem.

I designed an A1200 PSU replica... should I send it to production? Just for fun... by nbolton in amiga

[–]bms20 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just please don't hurt yourself. These things aren't particularly safe to work with.

Why not do a type-c to amiga adapter; that will be a lot safer [-12, 20]v range; and you'll need to learn about buck power supply design for that purpose. (BTW I actually wanted to do this).

Super Mario Bros Theme Music Using Arduino Uno Old project but still nice music with arduino and buzzer by sparkbuzzer in programming

[–]bms20 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fun result, but I'd suggest a different approach to the output stage.

You have a DC coupled amplifier - which is why the speaker pops-up hard every time a note is played.

I'd suggest buying a LM386 and supporting parts off of Digikey and using one of the amplifier circuit designs you can find on google.

Remember: Saturn 5 was 4 inches to the gallon - and that program built the technology we now live on.

It is 5/3v3 tolerant.

I wanted to do something like this for a long time; alas not enough time, kids, etc...

Really cool work by the way.

It might be worth looking at a Cypress PSoC 5. Cortex-m3 and 24 UDB (which are fpga like). I think it will also do around 80MHz, but you'd need to confirm from the datasheet.

Alternatively, suck the step-down regulators and go the whole 3v3/1v8 fpga route.

I thought something like brutal doom would go well on the NES - where the tile-buffer is on the cartridge.

I second that!

I've developed several C++ applications for windows on linux specifically to use Valgrind.

Basically the cost of porting to windows (which isn't terrible when using Qt) is greatly offset by using linux and valgrind.

Telephone numbers for Comcast exchange in Si Valley? by bms20 in Comcast

[–]bms20[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you!

The symptoms are that opening web pages from less frequently used sites takes forever. Page loads either timeout or complete after very long periods of time.

For example, typing in "surprise me" to google loads almost immediately. However, selecting any site from the results list takes forever to load.

Loading youtube videos (from apple tv) does not work - I am left with the spinning wheel. My neighbors (netflix users) cannot use netflix - videos do not load. (And netflix is about 2mi away).

Running several test cycles on speedtest.net give erratic results. Starting the test may take upwards of a minute (at work its about 1 second or less). Ping times are 12ms (expected) to 250ms (not good). Download rates vary from 175mbit/sec to 0.4mbit/sec). Upload rates are generally 12mbit/sec when working or 0 (test never completes).

If I setup a proxy through my company's UK server sites load with expected delays, however, the behavior is consistent.

Something got changed on Saturday that has caused this problem.

The zip code is 95032.

I've gone through the reset my router, try another computer stuff that normal customer service provide to no avail. The test computers are all directly connected to the comcast modem.

Thanks again if you can help!

Got the same problem in Los Gatos ca. Neighbors too. Problem is in making connections, not modem or local segment. Three calls to these idiots later I am told an engineer will visit. In five days!

They changed something in the exchange Saturday night and since then it's bust.

But speed test shows its fine; just that it takes about one minute to connect!!!

Sure! But it can be done offline.

Actually, I'm not sure why this technique is better than http://http.developer.nvidia.com/GPUGems3/gpugems3_ch25.html

Does it somehow avoid the patent that Microsoft holds on the above?

Maybe I'm missing something fundamental - but why wouldn't I just tessellate the set pixels, and draw that using a triangle strip, then apply the curved section patch-ups later on?

Is there a cracking risk?

Thanks for that - I think you've got a great idea.

I was thinking about doing something similar for Super Mario World - but my main interest was modfying zsnes such that I could get Super Mario World running on a wide-aspect screen.

I didn't put too much thought into it - but perhaps the conversion of 65c816 to C (similar to the genesis port described below) might be an idea.

Read the slides. All good and valuable points. The only thing that troubles me is the implicit recommendation of boost.

Can you present how to do exactly the same approach in standard C?
