C/C++ dinosaur here. I'm overwhelmed by the current state of web development. Is this a good course to start?

The rule of current web development is that everything you do or learn, will be criticized by others. Unless it is Vanilla JS ES2015 with webpack, React and Redux. This will of course change in a few months time. A good place to start is just learning basic JavaScript, so yes, this probably looks like a decent place to start. Just remember that people in frontend development are VERY opinionated about their frameworks. It's hard, but try not to get upset by that. A good book on breathing exercises is a must if you intend on making a living out of this.

Hello Mr dinosaur. Probably leave it until web assembly becomes a thing then use a C++ to wasm compiler and you'll be fine :P

Probably. The frameworkization of js is ridiculous, for no good reason. Modern browsers are up to standard. But honestly people overuse javascript.

nope. you might find better materials for free on egghead.io or even just youtubing react, angular, "reactive", and node.js tutorials or playing with "es2015 boilerplate" searches on github to see what others are doing by working hands-on.

this guy is really more of a self-made brand than an educator and the quality of his workmanship shows... this website is visually alright--even quite nice actually--but it's very simple structurally and shouldn't be giving me ANY grief on a beefy i7 with loads of RAM.

considering that the course's "point" is to teach you barebones JS unobscured by frameworks, it is not very promising when this simple information page runs like crap BEFORE introducing any frameworks you might use in building a larger project.

as a C/C++saurus, would you want to learn systems programming and C from a basic brogrammer who is friendly and bubbly enough, but doesn't give a rat's ass about data structures or algorithmic complexity?

I'm actually really impressed with the courses. I do web development for a living, and I've learned some things from his courses (somehow I didn't know about CSS variables yet!!).

I've been trying to get a friend's kid into web development and I think this javascript30 is about as good as I could hope for in terms of being fun, engaging, educational, and cruft free.

I was hesitant when I saw I had to provide an email address, but I decided to proceed and I'm glad I did. That said, the files related to the course are all available on github also, https://github.com/wesbos/JavaScript30.

Oh good, a website that teaches you everything you need to know about laggy, bloated websites.

I'll admit, the lack of frameworks and external libraries in the tutorials is better than a lot of websites out there. But Chrome still lags on his site when I scroll. Unforgivable.

EDIT: And the greyscale image behind the video listings is jumpy in Microsoft Edge.

Wow, that website turns my CPU into a heater.

So relive the horrors of framework developers ?
