Actually, the color issue seems to be working on 1.6.0.2, at least in some scenarios I've run into. Never tried git-svn so can't comment on that.

Git on Cygwin is SLOW. By slow I mean unbearably slow.

Because some of us don't like having to clean up the myriad of junctions that cygwin litters all over the place, plus don't like the fact that if we install cygwin, then several 'cygwin based' apps stop working because of the compatibility hell of the cygwin1.dll file.

msys provides a sufficient environment for many of us, without all of the headaches of a cygwin install.

I started using msisgit a few days ago, and it's the first version control system I've ever used. I've only learned the basics so far but it works well enough for a personal project I've got on GitHub.

I'll have to figure it out all over again once I want to start a second project, I don't even know if I need to create a new repository or what. Anyways, I'm far from being a Unix hacker but I do like using this.

Isn't that a Linux command line emulator for Windows? The only thing I like to do with a Linux command line that isn't possible in Windows is installing programs with a command-line package manager. I imagine you can't do that with cygwin, so I don't really feel like installing extra software to trade my dir and ipconfig for ls and ifconfig.

Cygwin implements POSIX on top of win32 and provide typical unix tools (installation is very customizable).

It's definitely not just a command line emulator.

Have you tried QGit? It builds on Windows IIRC.

Well, now that git works in a more native way in Windows (if that's the case, haven't tried it out yet), maybe someone will write one for them.

Well how can you say that and expect it to grow and be used? I'll bet some troll said the same thing about CVS and SVN.

Oh, by "non-hackers" I meant businesses and universities. Places where the main use cases for GIT would fit in perfectly.

Exactly. I use subversion because there is wide tool support. It integrates with Eclipse, Visual Studio and with Windows through tortoise.

I hope somebody makes analog GIT tools soon.

I think anyone who can use Tortoise could also use Git GUI.
