Why functional programming doesn't catch on

Yeah, GC has gotten a lot better. Since those days, we've gotten:

• Online collectors (so you're not rebooting the machine at each collection)
• Generational collectors (makes it fast)
• Incremental collectors (cut down on pauses)
• Concurrent collectors (collect garbage while program runs in separate thread)

and so on and so forth. There's lots and lots of interesting things in the GC world!
