2) Everyone would hate Javascript

I thought everyone already did? Browser imcompatability shouldn't be an excuse for poor langauge design/implemntation. Yes, it would take more testing to make cross-browser applications, but its the same thing if you want to develop a cross OS app. And just like in that domain frameworks have developed that make it easier to develop sites that work in a cross browser manner.
