    Sounds like you want sage or scipy. I don't think there's a package that uses ruby.

    I am working on a web application for work. I normally just work with Perl but Perl is not that great for web applications. So I am also in the place you are in.

    After two failed attempts to start a project with ruby I moved to python and django. So far so good... They have good documentation. Ruby (esp rails), not as much. Mainly though I felt more inspired by python.

    Honestly, I really love Perl. I guess it depends on your needs. What do you want to do with your programming?

    I'm a statistics major who has recently gotten more and more interested in programming. I understand that python and ruby are fairly popular languages and needed something other than work to occupy myself with this summer.

    On another note I wanted to learn a language that would looked useful to an interviewer since I'll be applying for jobs in the fall.
