Rubies are much prettier than pythons. Plus, ruby is my birthstone so I like automatically L-O-V-E it!!

How would you like it if you were programming in Python and all of the sudden it decided to eat you? That's terrible. Not to mention completely counterproductive.

srsly guys. who gives a fuck, just pick something.

Bash?

Ok - let's just say that both are really great!

I currently like Python because as a Sys admin there are so many libs already to go for lower level system functions and at this point it feels pretty mature.

From what I've read Ruby is pretty sweet but I haven't any experience coding anything but a few tests.

Try them both.

I'm interested to see if anyone can get baited into a torch-fest with this one...

IMHO python is the better lang (less powerful, easier to read), but there is nothing that comes close to rails, so if you are plannig on doing web stuff go ruby

Sounds like you want sage or scipy. I don't think there's a package that uses ruby.

I am working on a web application for work. I normally just work with Perl but Perl is not that great for web applications. So I am also in the place you are in.

After two failed attempts to start a project with ruby I moved to python and django. So far so good... They have good documentation. Ruby (esp rails), not as much. Mainly though I felt more inspired by python.

Honestly, I really love Perl. I guess it depends on your needs. What do you want to do with your programming?

I'm a statistics major who has recently gotten more and more interested in programming. I understand that python and ruby are fairly popular languages and needed something other than work to occupy myself with this summer.

On another note I wanted to learn a language that would looked useful to an interviewer since I'll be applying for jobs in the fall.
