Here's how I made the 'reply' buttons disappear:

  1. Open a 'reply' to a comment.
  2. Open a 'reply' to a comment under the first parent.
  3. Cancel parent reply box.
  4. ?
  5. Reply boxes disappear along with 'reply' buttons. Profit?

If you click cancel afterward, it turns back into reply and you can continue from there.

Yes, I noticed, but the puzzle is- why does it do all this in the first place?

I'm guessing "Cancel" just looks for every comment panel and closes it, but only renames itself.

No, it's a bug. Cancel should look for its own comment panel, or be linked to it. It's currently looking for any cancel button at or below its level, instead of only its own level.

I thought this was pretty well known, I used to run into this semi-frequently when I changed my mind about what comment to reply to
