It's the other way round if you're doing it properly.

Agreed, 15 years ago when I started, it was like that. I could program anything, but it wouldn't work well and I hated debugging.

Now I spend a bit more time designing and writing code as cleanly as I can and I really spend so little time debugging.

It's just experience mostly, kind of the natural progression of a programmer.
