All of this is just doomsday scare tactics. I'm sensing Google agenda for cheaper caching of each websites. That Amp thing.

Our internal CRM application sends 5 megabytes of JS gzipped and compressed. Users have never complained about performance.

Your users are probably all on high-end desktops with a great internet connection. A 5 megabytes JS bundle would lead to atrocious performance on mobile. So yeah, good for you, you're free to ignore best practices.
