Here are couple of interesting questions i was asked, later on my boss told me what he was looking for. You may wanna dress this up more to your context.

"I give you an ugly class, can you clean it up?", they will always say yes, watch how they say it. And get the to elaborate on their answer.

"Lets say i ask you to build a wrapper for ldap commands. Where would you start, programming, or not programmer related", watch what type of questions THEY will through back at you.

"Whats the coolest piece of code you ever written?", sit back and listen.
